Azzedine Alaïa and Christian Dior, two masters of Haute Couture
At the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation, the exhibition ‘Azzedine Alaïa and Christian Dior, Two Masters of Haute Couture’ highlights an essential lineage in French fashion.
Through a precise dialogue between the creations of the two couturiers, the Foundation reveals a shared vision of couture: rigorous cutting, mastery of volume and celebration of the female silhouette.
More than a tribute, the exhibition affirms the permanence of exceptional craftsmanship.
Absolute mastery of form
Christian Dior and Azzedine Alaïa share the same formal requirement: to construct clothing around the body.
At Dior, the silhouette is defined by a precisely drawn waist, structured volumes and femininity reaffirmed by the cut.
Alaïa extends this approach by radicalising it, transforming clothing into a second skin, precise and sensual.
The scenography juxtaposes the pieces without strict chronology, highlighting the correspondences in lines, proportions and construction. Each model reveals couture conceived as an architectural act, where technique serves timeless elegance.

The transmission of a vision
The exhibition draws on the personal collection of Azzedine Alaïa, who has been passionate about Christian Dior’s work since his arrival in Paris in 1956. By preserving and studying these pieces, Alaïa affirms a demanding vision of fashion, free from trends.
Now on display to the public, these creations bear witness to a living heritage, passed on through the gaze of one couturier to another.
The Foundation thus becomes a place of active memory, where haute couture reveals itself in its continuity, precision and enduring modernity.
