A biopic that has achieved cult status

In the film, shot in 2006, Sofia Coppola moves away from the traditional historical biopic to offer an intimate and contemporary portrayal of Queen Marie Antoinette.

Filmed largely at the Palace of Versailles, the film focuses on a sensitive portrayal of a young woman rather than on recounting major historical events. Long viewed through the myths that have surrounded her, Marie Antoinette emerges as a deeply human figure, grappling with isolation, boredom and the demands of court life.

Through a refined and colourful aesthetic, the director explores themes close to her heart, such as adolescence, the search for identity and self-discovery. In doing so, she transforms the queen’s image, making her more accessible and moving to contemporary audiences.

Now a cult film, Marie Antoinette has also helped to reshape perceptions of Versailles. The palace is no longer depicted merely as a symbol of monarchical power, but also as a place of intimate life, shaped by feminine sensibilities.

“During the production of Marie Antoinette, Versailles was much more than just a filming location:
it became an integral part of the film’s language and atmosphere, a true character
in the story. Looking back twenty years on the creative process that gave rise to the film, as well
as on the extraordinary work of the craftspeople who contributed to it, in this exceptional setting, is a
surprisingly moving experience.”
